Tipping Etiquette in Canada
Before Tax vs. After Tax
The traditional approach is to tip on the pre-tax amount since tax goes to the government, not your server. However, many Canadians tip on the after-tax total for simplicity. The difference is usually only 1-2% of your bill. If you received great service, tipping on the total is a nice gesture.
Automatic Gratuity
Many restaurants automatically add 18% gratuity for large groups (typically 6-8+ people). Check your bill before adding an additional tip. It's usually noted at the bottom of the menu or mentioned by your server.
When Not to Tip
Tipping is not expected for fast food, retail stores, gas stations, or counter service where you order and pick up your food. Some restaurants have adopted no-tipping policies with higher wages - look for signs or ask if unsure.
